News:

Barry Gordin (1952–2025) carried the heart and soul of the Drama Desk. Serving as Editor in Chief of DramaDesk.org, Barry donated endless hours to photographing all of the organization’s events, managing our website, and championing theater and the arts in New York City, as well as in the Hamptons. Barry’s photographs and stories will long be remembered for capturing the cultural lives of those communities and the people who helped create them.

As the Sondheim lyric goes, Barry was a real “Broadway baby.” His distinctive eye and enduring enthusiasm for the arts inspired the popular column “Gordin’s View” in Dan’s Papers, offering readers a lively window into theater openings, galas, and benefits. As editor-in-chief of Theaterlife.com, he championed the stage with dedication and flair.

A longtime New Yorker, Barry fulfilled many roles. The founder and owner of Barry Gordin Hair Design, a boutique salon nestled on Morton Street in the West Village, he earned a reputation as a gifted stylist. With his artistry and generosity, his warmth and gentle nature, he served as trusted confidant, and a source of inspiration to his clients, friends, and colleagues.

Barry shared his life with his loving partner of 42½ years, writer and actor Patrick Christiano. The two were married on the roof garden of Stewart Hall on July 15, 2015. Together they formed a creative and devoted partnership—both personal and professional.

A viewing will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. on Sunday, June 1, at Greenwich Village Funeral Home, 199 Bleecker St. A funeral service will follow on Monday in East Hampton at 2 p.m., where Barry found joy and community for many years.

Next Week:

Peter’s Brainteaser:

They’re the first words of a song heard in a Tony-winning musical of the ‘70s.

The words also constitute the full title of a Sondheim musical.

Understand that the name of the Sondheim musical is not the title of the song from the Tony-winning musical – but only its first words.

Hint: The one and only performer in that musical who won a supporting Tony was not one of the two who sang the song I’m looking for.
