Reviews:

MP: Once Upon A Mattress @ City Center Encores! January 24 – February 4, 2024
Musical theater legend Sutton Foster (The Music Man) returns to the City Center stage as Princess Winifred the Woebegone alongside Michael Urie (Ugly Betty) as Prince Dauntless in this beloved musical fairytale. Full of gloriously catchy melodies like “Shy” and “In a Little While,” this uproarious update of Hans Christian Andersen’s “The Princess and the Pea” also features Nikki Renée Daniels (Lady Larken), J. Harrison Ghee (Jester), Harriet Sansom Harris (Queen Aggravain), Cheyenne Jackson (Sir Harry), Francis Jue (Wizard), and David Patrick Kelly (King Sextimus the Silent).

Led by Tony-nominated Encores! Artistic Director Lear deBessonet (Into the Woods, Lionel Bart’s Oliver!) and with a new concert adaptation by Amy Sherman-Palladino (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel), Once Upon a Mattress sets an unapologetic free spirit loose in a repressed kingdom, reveling in Winifred’s ability to charm and transform with willpower, honesty, and a little bit of help from her friends.

Next up at Encores: JELLY’S LAST JAM (Feb 21 – Mar 3, 2024) and TITANIC (Jun 11 – 23, 2024)

PF: Our Class @ BAM, through February 11, 2024
Ten Polish classmates — five Jewish and five Catholic — grow up as friends and neighbors, then turn on one another with life and death consequences. Inspired by real life events surrounding a horrific 1941 pogrom in a small Polish village, this shocking, timely story follows their lives from childhood through eight decades in a new contemporary production of Tadeusz Słobodzianek’s masterpiece, from Ukrainian-born Jewish director Igor Golyak (The Orchard; State vs. Natasha Banina).

MP: Sweeney Todd with Nicholas Christopher (Sweeney Todd) and Jeanna de Waal (Mrs. Lovett)

PF + MP: White Rose: The Musical @ Theatre Row, through March 31, 2024
Based on the true story of young people bravely standing up to injustice, White Rose: The Musical will get its Off-Broadway debut with a limited 12-week run beginning January 17, 2024.

White Rose: The Musical is a powerful new musical that follows the inspiring story of a courageous group of university students who stood up to Hitler. Set against the backdrop of Nazi Germany, the musical follows Sophie and Hans Scholl and a group of young activists as they create and distribute leaflets challenging Hitler’s propaganda. Through its dynamic and hopeful portrayal, the musical vividly captures the unwavering spirit of youthful resistance against oppression, making for a compelling and heartwarming theatrical experience.

News:

Peter’s Brainteasers:

Although many characters in ME AND JULIET may have attended a play that had been written in the 16th century – they are in show business, after all — there are characters in another Rodgers and Hammerstein musical that we can say for sure saw one.

Who, what play, and in what musical??
