On today’s episode, Matt Tamanini is in conversation with one of the most in-demand directors and choreographers working today, Denis Jones. The two-time Tony nominee can be seen staging shows on Broadway, in New York, and at some of the best theatres around the country. He was most recently seen on Broadway choreographing “Tootsie,” last fall he provided choreography for the star-studded Kennedy Center Center Stage production of “Guys and Dolls,” and this summer he will direct and choreograph “Sister Act” at the Muny.
His latest project — a production of Lionel Bart’s “Oliver” — opened on Thursday night at the Maltz Jupiter Theatre in Jupiter, Fla. The show stars Benjamin Pajak most recently seen as Winthrop in “The Music Man” on Broadway, and one month after closing “Oliver” in Jupiter, Benjamin will play the role again in New York City Center Encore’s production.
Matt and Denis discuss Benjamin’s performance, the old axiom of working with kids and animals, the unique challenges of staging shows at regional theatres, and much more.
