“LOST MIDNIGHT” & STEPHEN SONDHEIM.
Here is the error on the Musical Numbers page of the INTO THE WOODS Opening Night Playbill, November 5, 1987, Martin Beck Theatre. Stephen Sondheim wrote “Last Midnight” for Bernadette Peters as the Witch so close to opening night that the change had to be phoned into Playbill with no opportunity to proofread it. As the musical’s press agent. when I first saw the error in the Playbill the afternoon of the first critics’ performance, I immediately called Steve, and with great trepidation, offered two alternatives. Would he consider quickly writing a new song for Bernadette called “Lost Midnight”? …Or…. my staff and I had would to go to the theatre and correct approximately 10,000 Playbills — covering opening night and all the critics’ performances — with fine-point Sharpies, changing the o’s to a’s. Steve’s reply as quick: “Get out the Sharpies!”
